In contemporary science the term ‘perception’ does not have uniform meaning across scientific disciplines. Its meaning depends on theoretical aspects (for example, on whether to assume that all of mesoscopic reality can be adequately described by classical physics), methodological aspects (for example, on whether to rely on classical psychophysical and/or brain imaging techniques or else on descriptive and experimental methodologies), and formal aspects (for example, on which type of syntax to select for simulation models and their implementation in machines). The coexistence of many and quite different concepts of perception in science is pervasive, with colour studies as a striking example (cf. Da Pos, Albertazzi 2010; Albertazzi, Poli 2014); below some of the reasons for this plurality of conceptions shall be mentioned.
