Pages 534 - 538

In Latin, the noun substratum is derived from the participle of the verb substernere (‘underlying’) and denotes that which is laid (stratum) under (sub) something. Along with the word subiectum (‘that which is thrown under something’) it has been used to translate the Greek noun hypokeimenon (‘the underlying’)
